The Mask Omnibus TP Vol 01
John Arcudi (w), Keith Williams (a), Doug Mahnke (a/c)
Dark Horse Comics

Ryan says: The story sounds familiar — mild-mannered Stanley Ipkiss discovers and wears a mask of unknown origin, and is instantaneously transformed into a shape-shifting whirlwind of slapstick cartoon destruction. With this new-found and seemingly unlimited chaotic power, “The Mask” is free to wreak vengeance upon anyone he has a grudge against.

But for those who’ve only ever seen the 1994 Jim Carrey movie, this omnibus will be a bombshell revelation to read, with lashings of murderous mayhem and dark humour! Collecting three full stories (The Mask, The Mask Returns and The Mask Strikes Back) this deliciously dense collection epitomises Dark Horse Comics’ comedic flair.

Independent Comics Publisher

Will says: I couldn’t just pick a single title for this week, but why restrict myself when I can pick 19!!! We are now stocking comics from the wonderful UK based publisher, ShortBox! Yes, I’m slightly cheating, these aren’t new releases from this week. However, they are new in stock at Orbital! And it does include their latest release, The Real Folk Blues: A Cowboy Beebop Fanbook – an anthology of comics, drawings and essays inspired my the titular anime. Just having a glance at the list of talent included in this book is enough to make your mouth water.

Shortbox prides itself on putting out some of the most unique titles on the market with some of the most talented creators. And what a variety there is! From cooking up ramen in Lucie Byron’s Food Baby, a mysterious journey of self-discovery in Joy San’s The Island, to Joe Sparrow’s powerful story about humanity and artificial intelligence in Homunculus. There’s something for everyone in this collection.

I cannot recommend this publisher, their books and artists enough. The artwork is always absolutely enchanting. I can’t wait to read their future titles. And there’s reason to be excited (at least subjectively), two of my favourite artists have upcoming books with Shortbox, James Stokoe and Wren McDonald!
