Welcome to the Orbital News Digest! Here are the latest NEWS and EVENTS from Orbital Comics, links to interesting things we found this week, and a full list of THIS WEEK’S NEW COMICS (at the bottom).

A life drawing event aimed at comic strip illustration – with costumes, props and poses inspired by Hammer Horror, Underground comix & the dark side of psychedelia.

We are pleased to welcome the Star King himself, Richard Starkings, who will be joined by the legendary Shaky Kane to sign ELEPHANTMEN and their other work. In addition, we’ll be selling an Orbital-exclusive print by Shaky, which the two will sign as part of the Elephantmen & Monsters exhibition. Don’t miss the opportunity to meet these two giants, grab a limited print and get your comics signed!

Join Rob Williams, Trevor Hairsine, Laurence Campbell and Ben Willsher as they hit Orbital Comics for an epic 2000AD mega-signing on June 7 from 2-4pm. The signing coincides with the release of the new Judge Dredd collection FALLOUT (which comes out later in the month) – but you can pick up a pre-release signed copy on the day. Don’t miss out on what is sure to be a zarjaz event!

Come celebrate with us the launch of Rachael Smith‘s debut graphic novel Launch Party! House Party is about three lost 20-somethings feeling disillusioned after being shoved into the real world since feeling like superstars at university. In an attempt to get their carefree composure and happiness back they throw a massive house party, just like they used to. Instead of reconnecting them with their younger selves, however, things go a little differently and the three of them must decide how to move forward in lives that none of them really asked for.

This week, things get x-treme, astonishing & uncanny as we delve into the world of The X-Men!
Tying in to the recently released installment in the film franchise, we kick things off with a look at Claremont & Bryne’s Days of Future Past, and Kitty Pryde’s first turbulent days at Xavier’s School. We then take a look a futher look at the mutant menace, and interpretations of The Good Book with the OGN God Loves, Man Kills. We then do a bit of public relations repair with Joss Whedon & John Cassaday’s Astonishing X-Men, discussing the controversial “mutant Cure”, and finally, head back to the future with Bendis & Immonen’s All New X-Men.

You can listen to it here or subscribe to the podcast on itunes.

So hey, what are you doing Friday after work? We gotcha covered with another awesome drawing class!

Now, over the past fortnight, something has become clear. If you’re not reading Comics & Cola on a regular basis, you are probably missing out on nice things and good writing. So Go Fish, check out a freebie, or plummet into the curious case of OK soda. Of course, Zainab isn’t the only comics blogger out there making good noises, Sean Kleefeld has some deep words for you on labels.

Cannon’s almost here… permission to squeal and hop from foot to foot GRANTED!

And how much are you enjoying the current all-ages renaissance? Wayward is looking like a sweetspot bullseye already, and any title that can generate two separate but interesting interviews has to have something going for it, right? But do all-ages comics really sell? Or is it just Tumblr noise? By way of an answer, what’s Batman’s monthly print run again? Heh. Plus, we have a new, European take on Doom to await, and you didn’t forget about Chicacabra, did you? And if all-ages isn’t quitedoing it for you, have a CAKE preview, too, from a certified Space Queen.

Let’s get this out of the way, Big 2 news this week was dominated by DC’s tragic/ironic/cynical bad math, and David Goyer’s limited/offensive take on She-Hulk, a complete timeline of whose fallout is here. As ever, Comics Alliance had some thoughts on the matter, worth reading. If that leaves the fans of strong female protagonists a mite jaded, Kickstarter has you covered for comics, or for action figures!

Many things are happening on Kickstarter at present, actually, like the superlative Oh Joy Sex Toy campaign, the more esoteric Bright Spiral campaign, and a look at just how many comics Kickstarters get funded. It’s pretty good news.

Dynamite are stepping up their game. Good. David Ziggy Greene wants you to get Scene and Heard (do it, do it!). And its never too late to be welcomed to the Metrodome.

Going into new territory, you may enjoy charting Lale Westvind’s intergalactic terrain, and Terry might just be your left-field purchase of 2014. But beware the Man Cat! And watch out, Sam Alden lurks in the Hollow. On a lighter note, you know how to pre-order a comic, don’t you?

Why do we insist on using film terminology for comics? Well, because. If that isn’t clear enough, maybe Darwyn Cooke, Steve Lieber, Emma Rios, Frank Santoro, or Eleanor Davis can guide you to a right way of thinking about comics. Then maybe next year you’ll be one of these folks.

How much have you actually thought about creator rights? Just askin…

And most important of all… Do you love yourself?
