One of the long-standing problems in the comics industry has been getting kids to read comics.
Sounds like an oxymoron, doesn’t it? The original child’s medium, not being looked at by children. With many of us growing up reading The Beano, The Dandy, 2000AD and then moving on to American Comics as we got older, the readership didn’t really change. It needed an influx of new readers every few years to invigorate both the industry and it’s creators. But this wasn’t happening. Newer readers wouldn’t start young enough to stick with it and if they did, it was hard to find titles suitable for very young fans.
But over the last few years the industry has woken up the possibilities of younger readers. Cartoons like Adventure Time have shown that surreal humour, strong moral messages and great stories are what kids were craving. That has led to a resurgence in comics-titles for kids that older readers are also happy to dive into!
As well as the aforementioned Adventure Time, there are beautiful art-led books (like those published by Flying Eye) as well as The Phoenix comics, Jeff Brown’s Darth Vader and Jedi Academy series. Even DC’s characters are now back at school with Superhero High and Study hall of Justice! There’s never been a better time to jump in to the brightly-coloured worlds that these books offer.
Head into Orbital’s West Wing and discover a whole world built to keep the kids entertained this summer, with our Kid’s Corner providing hours of fun and reading excitement for younger comics fans! And you never know… You might just find something for yourself too!
